For decades, the idea of being replaced by a machine has hovered over the heads of countless workers. Due to the rise of automated machinery, this fear becomes more and more of a reality with each passing year. While some saw automation at the workplace as an inevitability, total automation was years – if not decades – away. Recent events however may push that schedule up immensely.
With the world reeling from a Coronavirus pandemic, several notable changes happened at the workplace. For one, with non-essential businesses closed down to prevent public congestion, plenty of people are now staying at home. While some businesses still function, the lack of manpower has made companies rely on non-traditional means. Robotic workers such as drones have started fully occupying roles meant for everyday workers.
Workers vs Automation
Security for instance is an essential part of any business property. While patrolling guards have been used in the past, security drones can cover more ground at a faster pace. They have security cameras capable of recording footage. It is also possible for these drones to have thermal vision, perfect for nighttime routes. Drones capable of autonomy can easily follow a route and monitor their territories without any human supervision. This makes them more efficient in nearly every aspect. A flying drone can also see a larger area, giving them a far superior vantage point.
Package delivery has also been at the hands of drones. With drones capable of flying over routes, they can arrive at their destinations at a faster pace. With the recent pandemic, contactless delivery is in very high demand to avoid any potential spreading of the virus. Even after this health issue is resolved, the idea of contactless delivery will still be at a high demand. Photography has also soared to new heights through drones. Special events now use drone cameras to create an amazing view that no person with a camera can recreate. The ability to fly gives drones a distinct advantage, one that cannot be matched by those on the ground.
So what does this mean for the everyday worker? With robots taking over more and more jobs, what will people do? Is this a sign of things to come?
