I’ve been taking supplements to try and improve my mental and physical health for close to a decade now, but I had no idea what went into the production of these products until recently.

When you take a look at the ingredients list on the back of your favorite supplements, chances are you don’t recognize most of the items. This is because many of the ingredients used in supplements are isolated from natural sources and then purified for use in these products. In a lab setting, this process of isolating and purifying ingredients is done using a variety of different pieces of equipment.
One of the first things you’ll notice in a supplements research and production lab are the various pieces of equipment used to create and test the products. This can include everything from Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Other common pieces of equipment you might find are things like pH meters, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, and even nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers (NMR).
Of course, no lab would be complete without a few safety precautions. Most labs will have things like fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and safety showers. There will also be a variety of personal protective equipment (PPE) available, such as gloves, goggles, and lab coats.

As you can see, there’s a lot that goes into creating these products. From the various pieces of equipment used to the safety precautions in place, it’s clear that a lot of time and effort goes into making sure these products are of the highest quality.
