Airports all over the United Kingdom have strengthened their stance on rogue drone flyers. Starting this month, airports will now implement a five-kilometer ban on civilian drones. This is a massive increase from the old one-kilometer regulation.
Five-Kilometer Ban
It seems that the one-kilometer ban was not as effective as they had hoped. Multiple drone incidents in both the UK and globally have sparked chaos among the populace. The most famous one being the Gatwick Incident in London, where a single drone created countless delays and problems.
Now, with the five-kilometer ban on the way, would this be the end of all the rogue drone-flying incidents? Or will this be another obstacle that irresponsible drone owners can easily bypass?
Effects Globally
The five-kilometer rule hopes to prevent additional airport shut down. These delays and stoppages, especially during rush periods can affect thousands of people. The Gatwick Incident for example occurred during the Holiday rush. A close to 150,000 people on their way to flights globally had a terrible time in the ordeal. Many schedules were postponed, while some flights received cancellation altogether. It was a catastrophic spectacle to behold, with even bits of witch-hunting for the drone owner responsible.
What does the Future Hold?
At the end of the day, it all boils down to a single drone causing all this havoc. Newer regulations such as the perimeter increase is just the start. Drone registrations have been in the works for quite some time now. Owners with drones weighing above 250 grams must now register their devices. This means that if their drone breaks any regulations, it can easily be traced back to the person who purchased it.
Old and new flyers should be aware of these regulations if they intend to fly in the coming weeks. With heavier fines and penalties for irresponsible drone flying, will these airport incidents finally cease to happen?
