Uber is mostly known for their cab hailing services that have grown immensely in popularity over the decade. This program comes from an app and it gives regular people the ability to either earn money by driving, or get a ride without waiting for a cab. It has revolutionized the way people travel, as Uber (as well as other ride sharing companies and apps) now competes with public transport.
UberEats Drone Delivery
In recent years, the company, based in San Francisco, California has started branching out with their services. UberEats began circulating and it gave people an opportunity to deliver food. For customers, it gave them the option of not going out to get groceries or meals. It is a win-win for everyone, and it gives people more options to get their food the way they want.
Now, UberEats is taking it even further, with the use of drone technology. Uber hopes that by 2021, drone deliveries at a mass produced scale can bring burgers to your doorstep. This can reduce waiting periods significantly, while also acting as a sort of special attraction that can get you to try their service. Drone deliveries are more than available for online shops and medical supply chains. They help deliver (small) items ranging from mobile phones, to medicine and even blood donations.
The main problems encountered so far with drone deliveries are the weight and range limitations. Drones can only carry small items from one point to the next. The battery life is at fault for both limitations. The heavier the load, the more power it requires staying in the air. This limits the time it can stay up, leading to a shorter reach.
The solution to a shorter reach is creating more landing bays and destinations for drones to recharge while in transit. A network of these landing stations can provide a longer reach for drones, although the charging process can take a while – which means more waiting. The best scenario is a one-stop trip. This means one can only order for a drone if their area is reachable by the nearest station. While this may be somewhat of a hitch, it can be a great way to start building up a drone delivery system that eventually can reach most cities in a country.
