Researchers in the University of California may have just created the world’s smallest drone. The Ionocraft is a world’s first, in that it is a drone that has no moving parts. This means it does not require spinning rotors to navigate through the air. It also does not require wings to glide to its destinations to conserve any battery life. It flies solely on ionic thrusters.
Ionic Thruster Technology
The Ionocraft is about the size of a small coin. It is incredibly small and lightweight. The ionic thruster technology also makes it virtually noiseless when in flight. It has supreme stealth capabilities, and one may not even be aware of its presence even while flying.
The ionic thrusters create a propulsion system that requires to moving parts to fly and stay in flight. The Ionocraft offers a compact shape and design, and does not require maintenance of any moving parts.
Potential Uses
Researchers covering the Ionocraft may branch out into other fields. Not only will the small stature be useful in exploration, the silent flight is also ideal for espionage. Creating a bigger version of the Ionocraft while retaining the idea can pave the way for silent aerial transportation as well.
