The Reelight CIO – Battery-Free Light For Your Bike!

Nobody likes to keep having to purchase replacement batteries. Over time, the costs start to add up. If you’re a bicyclist (one with safety in mind), then chances are that you already have some sort of lighting system for your bicycle. How about a lighting system for your bike that involves no batteries? The product I’m referring to is the The Reelight CIO.

The idea behind is pretty simple. You mount a light to the front fork of the bike and on the seat stay for the rear while a magnet is mounted on the spoke of each wheel. The lights and the magnets have to be mounted perfectly so that every time the wheel spins, the magnet on the wheel passes right by the light on the frame. The lights also have an integrated generator so as the wheel turns and the magnets pass the light, the system will generate power. Each time the magnets pass each other, the lights flash.

What about when you are stopped? The lights have a backup system so you are able to keep a small charge to keep the lights flashing for up to two minutes even if you are not riding.  Installation is supposed to be fairly straightforward featuring a secure wire system made from coated stainless steel.
