Looking Into 2020 and Drone Improvements

The 2010s saw a very fast changing landscape in the world of drones. Companies such as DJI released a number of amazing drones, with the new ones offering better specs than their predecessors do. With 2020 already underway, what does the future hold for drones?

This year, drone technology may soon surpass its predecessors in every category possible.

A Better Way to Recharge

The days of charging your drone for hours may soon come to an end. Companies are finding new and better ways to charge drones. A lot of these ideas do not even require a drone to land in order to receive additional power. Some of the ideas floating around include:

  • Using solar panels built on drones to generate additional (backup) power. With a large enough drone you can have enough solar panels to provide energy to last years. In fact, several projects revolve around this idea – a massive drone that never has to land.
  • Charging drones via laser beams. It works in a similar concept to solar panels, although laser beams provide a more concentrated ‘dose’ of energy. This makes it a faster and more efficient option.
  • Adding more battery to a drone is also a possibility. This involves stripping down the drone’s internal gear to maximize space for batteries. While great in concept, you may end up sacrificing a lot for some added airtime.

2020 Travel

Traveling would also change because of drones. Various prototypes have been tested over the past few years regarding taxi drones. Many of them had expected release dates to be in the next year or two. These are drones the size of a car – fit to carry up to two passengers. Taxi drones also do not require drivers, being completely autonomous.

What do you guys think? Will 2020 be the year of the drone?
