Drone Helps Openreach Connect Welsh Village

An isolated village in Wales now haw fast broadband internet thanks to a drone.
Openreach, a cable company in Europe, used a drone in a remote Welsh village to lay cables. The drone was used because the company thought it would be too difficult for employees to lay the cable across the hilly terrain and rivers, and using a drone made the most sense.
The drone slung wires between telegraph poles, flying across a forested area near Pontfadog, Wrexham. The village, made up of only 20 houses, can now access the internet at speeds of nearly 1Gbps. Who knew drones would be able to get fast internet set up in such a small village?
Andy Whale, Openreach’s chief engineer, said that the project was very different to “connecting an apartment block in London,” and urban center with the majority of its areas easily accessible. Whale said that if employees had tried to run the cable through the forest, it would have been caught on branches, rocks, or other obstacles. It made sense to carry the cable over the forest and make sure it was above the tree line so that the risk of snags was minimized.
The fiber cable was too heavy for a single drone to lift by itself, so the drone strung a 328-foot long piece of fishing wire between two points. Rope was connected to the wire and to the cable, and then the cable could be pulled over the treeline.
Thanks to the drone, a job that would have taken many hours only took an hour to complete. The residents of the remote Welsh valley have already noticed a difference in their lives thanks to the broadband connection set up for them. Residents can now use the internet like people in urban centers: they can stay connected to WhatsApp and Facebook, make calls through Skype or Viber, and they can stream music on Spotify or watch movies online. Teenagers are already spending countless hours watching porn on the internet, all thanks to drones.
