From radar jammers, geocaching, and laser tech; bringing down an illegal drone can be a difficult process. A new creation may soon prevent airport and drone incidents from ever happening.
Airport Issues
There have been instances over the past few years of drones flying over restricted areas. For example, airports have experienced problems with rogue drones flying in their vicinity. The presences of drones in airports can create risks for incoming and outgoing planes. Because of this, airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick have started acquiring anti-drone countermeasures.
These two airports have experienced problems with recreational drones in the past. Gatwick for one had to deal with an infamous drone problem during the Holiday Season a few years ago. The issue caused delays, cancellations, and even a witch-hunt among the people inside.
A Problem with Drones
With all the chaos and commotion created by drones, one has to wonder what solutions may be available. So far, when authorities spot a drone flying around an airport, the solution would be to suspend flights until the issue resolves. This is to prevent the risk of collision between the lone drone and a loaded plane. The issue with this is that when authorities finally arrive to inspect the area, the drone (and its operator) is long gone.
This process can take up a lot of time. For a busy area such as the airport, even minutes of delays can affect thousands of people. Gatwick had its doors shut down by a drone for over a day at an incredibly busy time period. The incident left a sour taste in everyone’s mouths, with people putting the blame on the airport’s poor management.
A Modern Problem
With today’s drone technology becoming cheaper and more available to everyone, these airport incidents may soon rise in number. To prevent further issues at airports, several high traffic areas procured radar jammers and signal tracers. However, that may not be enough.
