Drones can travel at breakneck speeds towards the skies. In recent years, they also started venturing into the depths of the seas into parts unknown. Yes, drones no longer simply fly around parks to the delight of spectators nearby. Drones can now venture into territories never reached before.
Another project planned for the next decade (mid 2020s) involves a drone traveling great distances. And no, we are not talking traveling to a different continent, deep into the sea, or even high above the clouds. This time, drones may reach as far as Saturn’s largest moon. Of course, this is a far-reaching endeavor that may take over a decade to both plan out and fulfill completely.
Saturn Moon Project
The Dragonfly drone project hopes to receive the green light from NASA for this particular voyage. NASA is still conducting tests and checking what vehicle will have the privilege of traveling to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. The project expects to start 2025, which is six years from now. That is only the launch part, however. For the transport, whichever it may be, to arrive in Titan, it will take another nine years of travel. This adds up the total to halfway through the 2030s. Thinking about it now seems like it is a lifetime to go. However, for the minds behind the Dragonfly project, that is but a short time frame.
A Look into the Future
Of course, this is all forward thinking. NASA may not even announce their selection this year. The best Dragonfly can do (as well as the men and women behind the project) is to keep improving their product. That way, they can stand out from the rest of the competition. Who knows, maybe they can pull it off. A drone traveling that far beyond the reaches of the planet is an exciting story. Too bad it will take a long time before we arrive at the conclusion to this spectacularly futuristic ambition.
