On a previous article, we mentioned the capability of drones in lighting up the sky that can put fireworks to shame. Stepping aside for the future, firework usage has seen a decline over the past few years. Facing problems such as noise, smoke, and risk for fire, firecrackers have taken a backseat. The world is changing, and drones are leading the charge.
The world saw again the beauty of drone art spread across the sky, as Intel provided the opening attraction for the 2018 Winter Olympics. For the opening ceremony, the spectators at Pyeongchang, South Korea, were dazzled by the amazing display of lights and coordination created by a sea of drones. A total of 1218 drones took to the skies and created dazzling images filled with light and splendor. This unprecedented number of drones easily set the World Record for the most unmanned vehicles airborne at the same time. Intel’s Shooting Star System has exceeded expectations as over a thousand drones lit the night sky. A similar drone show has been seen at the 2017 Superbowl halftime show, however this event only showcased around 300 drones. The Winter Olympics’ display far outclassed that of its previous competitors, both in sheer quantity, as well as quality of the presentation involved.
Although pre-recorded, the drone display still amazed those who have seen it, giving further credence that these drone shows may in fact replace the fireworks shows completely. The Winter Olympics’ drone show was pre-recorded amidst fears of unpredictable and harsh weather conditions, which would have disrupted the drones’ performances. A live, but smaller, show is being planned by Intel to close out the medal ceremonies to follow.
Although the system of drones still face troubles, such as weather conditions and programming prior to the actual show, it is still a massive victory for the drones. Their case to be the staple for nightly celebrations have been shown, where they can illuminate the skies without the noise, smoke, and fire damage that usually accompanies firework displays.
