DJI Releases Special Goggles Designed for Drone Racers

DJI recently released new DJI Goggles for pilots who enjoy drone racing: the DJI Goggles Racing Edition (RE). These black goggles look like VR headsets, similar to the first release of white DJI goggles that were on the market in April. The goggles allow pilots to control drone movement with head movements, and the goggles (when in head-tracking gimbal mode) allow pilots to see from the drone’s perspective.
Luckily for many hobbyists, the goggles can work with non-DJI drones and other flight controllers including the Naze. They also support Sphere panoramic viewing, and work with the OcuSync Video Transmission Module for video streaming. It has 12 channels to reduce the amount of interference in drone racing, even when there are many drones flying in close proximity to each other.
The transmission module can reach latencies as 50ms, and uses an automatic frequency-hopping spread spectrum transmission to reduce interference: it can jump to both 2.4 and 5.8 GHz channels. The resolution is also surprisingly good, reaching 1280 x 960 and can be controlled up to 4.3 miles.
Pilots can also connect two separate pairs of goggles so that two people can watch and control a drone together. The DJI Goggles RE are for sale at $549; for pilots with a bit more money to spend, they can purchase the DJI Goggles Backpack and OcuSync Air System in a bundle for $859.
