Whether you’ve been dabbling in photography for years, or you just decided to pick it up, the right accessories are essential in becoming both a serious photographer or an amateur. While the camera is obvious, there are plenty more accessories that are vital to improving your capabilities and your comfort as a photographer that might not be so obvious.
The Right Camera
You can have all the accessories in the world, but without the right camera, those accessories are almost meaningless. If you are a serious photographer, your budget and needs may prove more expensive than those of an amateur photographer. Even amateur photographers, however, need the right digital camera. These cameras offer options for those looking for simplicity, or those who want a wide range of features. With plenty of options to choose from, you can find the right camera to fit your needs at any level and within most budgets.
Different Lenses
Although your camera might come with a decent lens in addition to the body, you need many different lenses unless you plan on shooting the same subjects over and over. It may take some time to build up your collection, but you will eventually want a standard zoom lens, a wide-angle lens, and a telephoto lens. Although your camera should come with a telephoto lens, the capacity is usually not enough for serious photographers.
External Flash
There is nothing worse for a photographer than not having the right lighting for a photo. Luckily, you can make you own lighting for all your photos with an external flash. Your camera should come equipped with a connector on top of your camera to connect an external flash. Although many external flashes do work with various types of cameras, it’s usually best to buy the same brand of flash as your camera to get optimal results.
The Right Tripod
Even if you have a steady hand, you can’t beat the capabilities of a tripod for still shots. A tripod lets you photograph landscapes and architecture without worrying about improper angles or blurred images. It also takes the burden off you from having to hold that heavy camera while you try to get the perfect shot. Although it’s tempting to be frugal when buying a tripod, remember that it’s essentially a waste of money if it’s not sturdy enough to stand up and stay steady outside in the elements.
Camera Straps
Since your camera likely is equipped with a generic camera strap, it may not cross your mind to upgrade this accessory. Considering your camera’s weight — especially with the lens attached — you need proper support to carry around your camera. A good camera strap is one of the least expensive accessories you will buy, but will make a huge difference in your comfort.
Timer Remotes
There will be times when you need to snap a photo without actually touching your camera. Maybe you want to get in the picture yourself, or perhaps you’re worried about camera shake from touching the shutter button. Wired or wireless timer remotes help with both of these situations. By using a timer remote, you gain complete control over your photographs and you lessen the risk of blurred images.
Camera Bag
It may not seem that essential, but a good camera bag can make your experience much easier and help to protect your camera and accessories. A good camera can be an expensive investment, and the accessories tend to be pricey as well. Protect your investment and increase your comfort and even your style by finding a good camera bag to carry around all your amateur photography essentials.
If you want to be a serious amateur photographer, you need to spend the money on the right camera. After you have your camera, don’t be satisfied with the accessories that come standard with your camera. Make sure you invest in the right accessories to improve your photographs and to keep your equipment safe. Make a wish list, and then start working through it as your budget allows.
