While the camera is obvious, there are plenty more accessories that are vital to improving your capabilities and your comfort as a photographer that might not be so obvious.
The Right Camera
You can have all the accessories in the world, but without the right camera, those accessories are almost meaningless. If you are a serious photographer, your budget and needs may prove more expensive than those of an amateur photographer. Even amateur photographers, however, need the right digital camera. Although it’s tempting to be frugal when buying a tripod, remember that it’s essentially a waste of money if it’s not sturdy enough to stand up and stay steady outside in the elements.

Since your camera likely is equipped with a generic camera strap, it may not cross your mind to upgrade this accessory. Considering your camera’s weight — especially with the lens attached — you need proper support to carry around your camera. A good camera strap is one of the least expensive accessories you will buy, but will make a huge difference in your comfort.
Timer Remotes
There will be times when you need to snap a photo without actually touching your camera. Maybe you want to get in the picture yourself, or perhaps you’re worried about camera shake from touching the shutter button. Wired or wireless timer remotes help with both of these situations. By using a timer remote, you gain complete control over your photographs and you lessen the risk of blurred images.

It may not seem that essential, but a good camera bag can make your experience much easier and help to protect your camera and accessories. A good camera can be an expensive investment, and the accessories tend to be pricey as well.
