Rearview Camera for Bicycles

A bicyclist’s worst nightmare is to get rear-ended by a coffee sipping or a texting driver. You innocently move a little to the left to go around a parked car or some other obstruction in the road, and you get nailed by a car coming up from behind. Some careless motorists like to pass cyclists within mere inches, so moving even a tiny bit to the left unexpectedly could put you in the path of a car. The risk is likely greater at night and in rides outside the city where traffic is faster and lighting is worse.

To make the cyclist’s life easy, Hammacher Schlemmer has come up with a clever and useful product and hopes to remedy this problem with its bicycle rear-view camera that provides a real-time, clear view of what is approaching from behind. The weather- and vibration-resistant device includes a pocket-sized camera that mounts on the seat post and a color monitor that attaches to the handlebars. The 2 1/4″ W x 1 1/2″ H camera mounts to a bicycle’s seat post, provides a rear-facing 75º field of view ideal for seeing approaching vehicles or other cyclists. A 78 3/4″ zip-tied cable that accommodates any frame geometry connects the camera to the handlebar-mounted 3 1/2″ TFT color monitor (fits bars up to 1 1/4″ diameter); quick-release mechanism removes the monitor easily from handlebars for charging or when you park your bicycle. A circular pattern of red LEDs flash when the camera’s built-in sensor detects low-light conditions for visibility to traffic.

Even if you decide to invest $ 179.95 in this Rear-view Camera, we must emphasize to please follow all safety precautions while cycling on city roads and use gear for additional visibility e.g. flashing red rear light, rear blinkers, and high quality reflective jacket.
