4 Ways Geeks Rock Fashion Better than Anyone

There are so many cool fashion styles that get overlooked by the mainstream media, and that might be why they’re largely embraced by geek culture. When you’re on the nerdy side, you tend to look for things that most people would ignore. Sometimes those searches result in great finds, especially when it comes to fashion.

People who tend to be a bit nerdy also tend to be braver in terms of how far they’ll take their creativity. However, sometimes a great outfit is something subtle with a splash of creativity.

Either way, if you’re tired of the status quo, check out the following ways geeks are rocking fashion better than anyone these days.

1. Retro styled clothing

There are two types of retro clothes – clothes made in the past and new clothes made with retro symbolism. Both happen to be popular right now and are an integral part of geek culture, especially for date nights. For example, you can find sweaters and t-shirts printed with vintage video game consoles like Nintendo, Gameboy, and Atari.

Sweaters seem to be the most popular retro-themed clothing item, perhaps because sweaters can go with anything. They can be crew neck, turtleneck, thick, or thin, and they’ll still look great with jeans or slacks. Most retro styles stick with the 1980s-1990s, but there are people who go all the way back to the 1960s-1970s.

It’s not uncommon for people to show off their nerdy side by wearing these retro-themed sweaters for a date night coupled with more traditional accessories like diamond stud earrings. Sometimes simple jewelry makes the best addition to a nerdy outfit.

2. Vintage accessories

You may not notice it right away, but many geeks and nerds sport antique and vintage accessories. Many people scour antique stores for vintage bags, purses, belts, shoes, and jewelry. There are so many treasures just waiting to be found at garage sales, estate sales, and antique stores. Garage sales are perfect for the nerds who juggle school with work and like spending their weekends hanging out with friends.

Some of the most popular vintage accessories you’ll spot may not even look vintage. Since fashion tends to recycle every 20 years or so, old pieces of jewelry can sometimes look new, based on current styles. However, rings tend to look their age since most settings are pretty dated.

When it comes to vintage bags, there are companies that create remakes of vintage purses and handbags, but most geeks prefer the real deal.

3. Fandoms

What geek doesn’t belong to a fandom? Fandoms are interesting because some people go all-in, complete with roleplaying, but others tend to admire their favorite shows and characters from a distance. Either way, people involved in fandoms love to express their fandom love through clothing.

There are general fandoms, like science and quantum physics, for example. There are also more specific fandoms inside of each general niche, like Big Bang Theory, for example. Pretty much any TV show, internet series, or well-known character likely has a fandom. There are even fandoms for B-rated movies from the 1970s that most people have never heard about.

Fandoms don’t need to be based on something current. For instance, Star Trek has a strong fandom that has been around for decades. It’s not just thriving, it’s continually growing. Even though the series has been off the air for many years, it gains new fans and followers every year.

Not everyone is into fandoms, even when they really enjoy a show or a character. However, people who don’t have a favorite fandom are missing out on all the opportunities to wear clothes that just look amazing.

4. Ties and bow-ties

Most of the time, you probably think of bow-ties and ties as professional attire. However, geeks have taken over this area of fashion with grace and they’re not going with the usual patterns. In fact, if you want an interesting tie that will stand out, ask the geek in your life for a recommendation.

There are so many fun and interesting, absolutely nerdy patterns to be found. There are patterns with galaxies, trademarked characters like Batman and Superman, musical notes, computer parts, and familiar faces like Albert Einstein.

Want to look great? Get creative

The reason geeks always look good is because they wear whatever they want without trying to impress other people. Well, they may dress to impress their friends, but they don’t dress to impress society.

If you’re bored with your wardrobe, try going retro or adopting a fandom style – you’ll stand out, but you just might like the attention.
